Candy Wiki

Sour Patch Kids (known as Very Bad Kids in France, and also known as Maynards Sour Patch Kids in Canada and previously in the UK), is a sour gummy candy maufactured by Mondelez. Every gummy is shaped like a "Sour Patch Kid", the candy's mascot and namesake. Sour Patch Kids are coated in sour powder, but the powder can easily be removed by sucking on the candy, exposing the sweet gummy center. For this reason, Sour Patch Kids are marketed with the slogan "First they're sour, then they're sweet" ("Sour, Sweet, Gone" since 2023).

Flavors & Variations[]

There are five variations of the candy: Original, Tropical, Watemelon, Extreme, and Your Mix. The original variant (the most common and famous) has five flavors: Redberry (red), Blue Raspberry (blue), Lemon (yellow), Orange (orange), and Lime (green). The Tropical variant has the flavors of Pineapple (white), Passionfruit (purple), Paradise Punch (pink) and Tropical Twist (orange) instead of the original flavors. The Watermelon variant features watermelon-flavored gummies designed to resemble watermelon wedges instead of kids. The "Sour Patch Kids Extreme" variant includes additional acids in its recipe, causing it to be more sour than the standard variant while using the original five flavors. The "Your Mix" variant is created by the consumer on the official Sour Patch website, which allows the consumer to add Redberry, Blue Raspberry, Orange, and the exclusive flavors of Grape (purple), Strawberry (pink) and Pineapple (white) to their own personal box, which is delivered to their door.

History[]

The candy was first created by Frank Galatoile in the early 1970's under the name "Mars Men". They were originally produced by the Allen Candy Company in the late 1970's under the name "Sour Patch Kids" (likely to cash in on the popularity of Cabbage Patch Kids). The Allen company was purchased by Mondelez in the 1990's, and Mondelez now handles production of the sweets.[1]
